Why Seed Oils Might Be Sabotaging Your Weight Loss Goals – Insights from a Women's Nutrition Coach

As a dedicated Nutrition coach for women over 40, I'm committed to providing insights that can make a real difference in your health journey. One often overlooked factor is the type of oils we consume daily. Let's explore how certain seed oils might contribute to weight gain and inflammation, and why choosing extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) could be a beneficial alternative.

The Hidden Culprit: Seed Oils, Inflammation, and Weight Gain

Seed oils, such as rapeseed , soybean, and sunflower oils, have become common in many households due to their affordability and presence in processed foods. However, concerns have been raised about their potential health impacts.

Research suggests that the high levels of omega-6 fatty acids in these oils may disrupt the balance with omega-3s, leading to increased inflammation—a key driver in many diseases, including obesity. As a Nutrition coach, I often see how chronic inflammation can hinder weight loss by disrupting hormonal signals related to hunger and fat storage.

Additionally, the rise in seed oil consumption has been paralleled by an increase in obesity rates, suggesting a possible link.

The Industrial Origins of Seed Oils

The production process of seed oils is far from natural. Historically, oils like cottonseed oil were considered industrial byproducts, initially used for cleaning and lubricating machinery. The extraction process involves several steps:

  1. High-Temperature Heating: Seeds are exposed to extremely high temperatures, which can cause the unsaturated fatty acids to oxidise, creating potentially harmful byproducts.

  2. Chemical Solvents: To maximise oil extraction, seeds are treated with petroleum-based solvents like hexane.

  3. Deodorisation and Bleaching: The extracted oil undergoes processes to remove undesirable odours and colours, often involving additional chemicals.

This extensive processing highlights how unnatural it is to extract large quantities of oil from seeds, especially when compared to traditional methods like pressing olives for their oil.

The Mediterranean Marvel: Extra Virgin Olive Oil

In contrast, extra virgin olive oil has been a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, renowned for its numerous health benefits. Rich in monounsaturated fats and polyphenols, EVOO supports heart health and may aid in weight management.

Studies have shown that EVOO consumption can enhance fat metabolism, making it easier for your body to burn calories efficiently. It also promotes a feeling of fullness, helping you manage your appetite more effectively. This is why I always recommend EVOO as a healthier alternative.

Making the Switch

Transitioning to extra virgin olive oil doesn't require a complete dietary overhaul. Here are some simple tips to get started:

  • Cooking: Use EVOO for sautéing vegetables, grilling meats, or as a base for homemade sauces. Its absolutely fine to use it for all types of cooking (as new research suggests)

  • Salads: Drizzle EVOO over your salads for added flavour and health benefits.

  • Baking: Replace margarine with EVOO in your baking recipes for a healthier twist.

Incorporating it as part of a balanced diet can help you achieve your weight loss goals aswell as reduce hormonal symptoms without compromising on flavour or nutrition.

Why not add garlic to your EVOO bottle and let it ferment for a lovely garlic infused olive oil!
